What should I look for in an electric fire?
Do electric fireplaces need a chimney?
Perhaps the biggest draw of electric fires is that they don’t require a chimney or flue. This means you can install them just about anywhere in your home. Electric fireplaces also promote clean indoor air and have no gas lines to maintain or ash to clean up. Simply plug them in and enjoy instant heat and beautiful visuals.
Are electric fireplaces energy efficient?
While gas fires and wood stoves max out at about 90% efficiency, electric fireplaces boast 100% efficiency. This means every bit of electricity goes toward generating the light and heat you enjoy when operating your electric fireplace. Just keep in mind that electricity is a more expensive fuel source than natural gas and wood, which could raise your operating costs.
How well do electric fires heat a room?
The heat output of an electric fireplace ranges from 1.5kW to 2kW. This is enough to provide comfortable, even heating. Be aware that gas fires can produce up to 6kW of heat, but these installations require a chimney.
